Budgeting Basics

Budgeting Basics

Payday loans are a great, temporary solution to cash flow problems. However, you dont want to always need a payday loan to see you through. Skillful money management is a great way to fill those cash flow gaps. Budgeting can be simple and easy, no questions asked. Learn how with our budgeting basics guide.

Set Goals

If you dont have some foreseeable financial goals, it can be difficult to establish and maintain a budget. Ask yourself where you want to be financially. What would you like to do with your money? Set short-term, intermediate, and long-term goals. Write down your goals, the cost of each, and the date by which youd like to accomplish them on a piece of paper.

Establish a Budget

If goal-setting is about where you want to be, setting a budget is about where you are right now. Set to work creating a budget that keeps your financial goals in mind. The best way to create a budget is to track your expenses for one month. For that month, write down in a notebook every dollar you spend. When the month is over, categorize your expenses and total them. Add up your monthly income with your pay stubs. Now compare expenses to income. Do you have a negative balance? If so, you need to figure out a way to either trim expenses or make more money. Set monthly limits on each category of expenses to make your budget.

Save, Save, Save!

Everyone runs into cash flow problems every now and then, but savings can serve as a buffer so you dont need a payday loan every time. Try to start out small, saving 5% of your income. Gradually increase that percentage until you reach 10%. And pay yourself first. If you make savings a priority, you will find ways to cut costs to make it happen.

Spend Responsibly

Most financial experts recommend using cash for purchases whenever possible. There are two reasons behind this theory. First, the psychological effect of forking over actual cash instead of a piece of plastic reinforces the idea that you are spending real money. Secondly, by paying cash for purchases, you will spend less on the item than you would have by charging it because there are no interest charges on cash. Part of spending responsibly also involves paying off any credit card balances you accrue in full each month. This is a good habit to establish so you dont waste your money on interest expenses.
